Boston-based indie-rock band Pimmer recently released the single “Distant Dam” off their upcoming debut LP Halcyon 303, which out now on Mint 400 records.
Pimmer are a fairly recent creation, but they’re already starting to carve out a name for themselves in their local scene and beyond. Founded by songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Sanford Schaffer, the band claim Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Sonic Youth, Oasis, Hüsker Dü, The Jam, The Killers, and XTC as influences.
Halcyon 303 is an anthology of songs worked on with Grammy Award-winning engineer Ducky Powell, who sadly died in 2023. “It’s a collection of tracks from those particular years where there were no gigs, no tours and no band—I just wrote a lotta songs and recorded them with Duck,” explains Schaffer. Then after the music started to gain some traction, Schaffer was given a huge opportunity. “The opportunity to sign with Mint 400 Records just sort of flew in through the window one day while I was at work; it was totally unexpected.”
“‘Distant Dam’ was prompted by an economics article I read in a newspaper years ago,” explains Schaffer about the single. “The notion that power for the lights and heat we all enjoy in our homes comes from a sort of ‘Neverland‘ was bemusing to me. The image of a distant hydroelectric dam emerged … Lyrically, it discusses travel across the USA, between big cities, while acknowledging the immense power required to keep our way of life going. Meanwhile, the narrator, who has a more rootless existence, is holding court. Because this track seemed to resonate initially with listeners, it seemed natural for it to be the album opener.”
