New York hyper-punk duo poptropicaslutz! releases the first single from Epitaph Records this year, “Sierra Echo X-Ray.” The track is in good hands, produced by Chris Lyon, who has handled work for Chainsmokers, Rina Sawayama and Carly Rae Jepsen.
The track builds a whimsical soundscape layering pulsating synths with glitchy transitions over a dynamic drum pattern. The melody is catchy with the vocals heavily autotuned. Poptropicaslutz! trade youthful and sincere lines about the naiveties of dabbing in intimacy for the first time.
It’s clear the Gen-Z songwriters draw inspiration from multiple corners of the scene. It’s Hellogoodbye meets Juice WRLD meets Fall Out Boy with the Black Eye Peas sprinkled in. poptropicaslutz! ended the year with more than 1.2 million monthly streams. They begin the year as the first Epitaph band to release a song, a sign of positive things to come.
