Growing up on a half-pipe and street skater myself, this band comes to mind: Big Boys. These punk rock legends shaped and brought their own to the stage. No one could or can ever duplicate their songs or sound. Think of funk, ska, hardcore, and rock thrown into a blender with twist of lime and a splash of good ol’ tequila. Go check em out on YouTube and watch the fans smiling the whole time!
The Big Boys are bringing it via Touch and Go Records March 29, 2024. They strived to do it on their own terms with no apologies. This Austin, Texas band emerged in the ’70s, bringing punk rock with blends of punk and funk innovating their own style. They eliminated obstacles by throwing themselves into complete no-man’s-land with their albums. Originally released in 1981, Where’s My Towel is now available for pre-order via Touch and Go Records (140-gram aqua blue vinyl limited pressing of 1000). Released in 1983, Lullabies Help The Brain Grow is ready as well for preorder.
Probably my favorite in this total arsenal of punk rock classics, No Matter How Long The Line Is At The Cafeteria, There’s Always A Seat! These guys welcomed everyone and engaged their fans! Their songs on this album slam dancing fun with slinging guitars, fast drums thrashing with mixes of base solos. I mean, if you want authentic thrash punk rock with funk, this is your band! The band features frontman Randy “Biscuit” Turner, Tim Kerr on guitars, Chris Gates on bass, and several drummers, but their best-known stick master was Rey Washam. The late Randy Turner left his legacy of art and music inspiring the fans across the globe.
For years, this band brought their grittiness and true bone hardcore punk rock with a thrashy dance vibe to it. Go check out their videos if you have not seen them live. It was rebellious, and they resonated with their fans, eye to eye, on equal grounds. Their fans are still loyal to this day, and their legacy carries on inspiring others to, as they would say every time at their shows.
