Punk band Pussy Riot’s 2021 art intervention, Virgin Mary, Please Become A Feminist, is set to auction as an NFT piece on SuperRare on September 29.

Pussy Riot celebrate an anniversary of being wrongly convicted by sharing an art intervention “Virgin Mary, Please Get Rid of Putin.”  Hand-made draw’s by Pussy Riot’s co-founder Nadya Tolokonnikova, reflect on women’s power and the current political situation in Russia, including issues like police brutality, reproductive rights, imprisonment of political activists, government’s crackdown on feminist and LGBTQ rights movements.

Tolokonnikova’s hand-drawn art pieces are placed on top of a copy of Pussy Riot’s prison sentence—an exact copy that was given to Nadya while she was locked in cell #309 of Jail №6 in Moscow.

“For one minute they shouted, jumped, kicked up their legs, imitating dances and striking imaginary opponents with fists. Realizing the unlawfulness of the act being prepared, Tolokonnikova, Samutsevich, Alekhina and unidentified accomplices planned to hide their faces under multi-colored masks with slits for the eyes and mouth,” says Pussy Riot on prison.

“The court sees the following as the motive of religious hatred in the actions of the defendants: the defendants position themselves as supporters of feminism, that is, the movement for the equality of women with men. Currently, individuals who identify themselves as members of the feminist movement are fighting for gender equality in political, family, and sexual relations. A number of religions, such as Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Islam, have a religious and dogmatic basis that is incompatible with the ideas of feminism.”
