On August 21st, Joe Strummer would have been 68 years old. Some friends and admirers marked the occasion by throwing an online party called A Song For Joe: Celebrating the Birthday of Joe Strummer. In true Strummer fashion, the event also raised money for a good cause. Donations were accepted for Save Our Stages, an organization devoted to assisting music venues closed due to Covid-19.

A Song For Joe included performances and appearances from folks as diverse as actors, politicians, punks and deadheads. It featured Jeff Tweedy, Beto O’Rourke, Bob Weir, Brian Fallon, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Hause, Dropkick Murphys, H.R., Frank Turner, The Interrupters, Josh Homme, Matt Dillon, Spider Stacey, Steve Buscemi, Tom Morello, and many more. There was also some previously unseen live footage of Strummer himself.

The two hour A Song For Joe was produced by Gates of the West and Dark horse records, and hosted by Jesse Malin. You can view the entire event on Joe Strummer’s official YouTube channel. Find all other things Joe Strummer here.
