Rockers, metalheads, celebrities, entertainers, and fans from all walks of life joined together at Pinz Bowling Center in Studio City, California earlier this month to take part in the 5th annual “Bowl for Ronnie” bowling party.
Not only were guests there to commemorate the life of one of the greatest voices in music, but they were all there to support an ongoing mission to raise money for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. The evening full of fun, raffles, bowling, and raised horns was hosted by respected broadcast personality Eddie Trunk and had some very prominent musical/entertainment figures in attendance.
Among the crowd were the legendary Geezer Butler, Dave Grohl, Jose Mangin, Jeff Ross, Steven Adler, and world champion bowler Jason Belmonte. The sold-out-in-advance event raised more than $50,000 for the music-based cancer charity.
The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund was founded in memory of the legendary rock singer Ronnie James Dio who lost his life to gastric cancer in 2010. A privately funded 501(c)(3) charity organization dedicated to cancer prevention, research, and education, the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund has already raised over $2 million in its short history.
Since 2016, the Dio Cancer Fund has also committed funds to support the research of Dr. David Wong and his team at the UCLA School of Dentistry in developing a simple, non-invasive saliva test for the early detection of cancer, which is in keeping with the Fund’s mission of cancer prevention, research, and education.
At the bowling party, The Dio Cancer Fund presented Dr. David Wong and his research team with a check for an additional $25,000 to go towards their research.
On the surface, “Bowl For Ronnie” may look like a group of celebrity musicians, entertainers, and fans coming together for a few rounds of bowling, but digging deeper reveals a truly inspiring story. Through the minds of these metalheads and others coming together to raise money towards cancer prevention and research, there is a much more significant impact being made in the world.
The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund will host a 10th Memorial Awards Gala on February 20, 2020 at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. Visit here for updates and ticket information.
