News: SeeYouSpaceCowboy Schedule Their ‘Coup De Gráce’ For April 19

SeeYouSpaceCowboy

The clock is counting down to the release of SeeYouSpaceCowboy’s newest hardcore album Coup De Gráce on April 19. Here’s what we know so far.

Earlier this month, SeeYouSpaceCowboy blessed us with a teasing EP paired with a close to five-minute music video to announce their upcoming album titled Coup De Gráce. The EP takes four songs from the final tracklist of 12, the music video featuring the first two of these tracks to seamlessly blend into an enticing “cabaret/burlesque” noir. SeeYouSpaceCowboy have committed themselves to exploring brand new musical styles and sensations for this release. This experimentation of freedom of expression embodies frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa’s description of the band as “a band of identity crises” (Connie Sgarbossa via Twitter/X). Melding chaos into carefully crafted energy sweetens the unique screamo nature of SeeYouSpaceCowboy and anticipates a transformative album for the band.

The music video incorporates monochromatic 1930s swinger imagery with a modern cabaret-style ‘rockout’. iRis.EXE serenades us into the joyous breakdowns and addictive melodies of this reimagined SeeYouSpaceCowboy. It’s truly an enticing insight into the potential of the upcoming album.

Excitement over the release of Coup De Gráce is rampant, particularly because of its rich collection of artist collaborations. Fortunately, the recent EP gave us two of these collaborations early: ‘Respite For A Tragic Tale’ featuring iRis.EXE and ‘Rhythm and Rapture’ featuring nothing, nowhere. We are still eager to hear the collaborations with Kim Dracula and Spiritbox’s Courtney Laplante and expect them to be just as invigorating and infectiously fun.

Connie had spoken excitedly about the prospect of the then-unnamed album on The Downbeat Podcast (watch Connie’s episode here) in August 2023, noting some of the band’s inspiration for direction:

“We wanted to take what we had done with (The) Romance of Affliction but imbue, like, the indie rock that me, Ethan (drums/guitar/vocals) and Timmy [bass/guitar] grew up listening to: Two Door Cinema Club, Interpol, Bloc Party.”

Connie would later detail this inspiration by participating in a Twitter/X trend of posting a photo of an album of your creation alongside three inspo-albums. On March 15, Connie featured the album art for Coup De Gráce alongside albums from Alexisonfire, Panic! at the Disco, and Fear Before The March of Flames.

On The Downbeat Podcast, Connie also expressed her gratitude to fellow metalcore musician Isaac Hale (lead guitarist of Knocked Loose) for producing their previous album The Romance of Affliction and returning to help write parts of Coup De Gráce. She also raved about partnering with producer Matt Squire, who previously worked on Panic! at the Disco’s album A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out (which was the Panic! album featured in Connie’s post). Isaac’s metalcore complexities and fervent breakdowns drive SeeYouSpaceCowboy’s loud staple through the influence of indie rock nostalgia and Matt Squire’s pop rock expertise.

With a variety of strong inspiration and support, Coup De Gráce is built for success and the four pre-released tracks have us instantly hooked. It’s evident from listening to the EP that SeeYouSpaceCowboy are eager to explore new territory as a band and bend their brand of post-hardcore metal music in new ways. SeeYouSpaceCowboy will be joining Better Lovers on their North America tour, commencing 18 April 2024. Perhaps we may hear these tracks played live sooner than we think!
