SeeYouSpaceCowboy on “To The Dance Floor For Shelter”:

“This song is our little ode to the emo songs that we were all obsessed with growing up. We wanted something that would almost feel cinematic in nature and felt like it carried you through from the piano in the beginning to the journey through the middle to the climax. It’s a song that Courtney’s vocals beautifully fit into as a voice that leads you to that destructive end.”

The birth of SeeYouSpaceCowboy took place in 2016, and each and every track they released runs deep with both life experience and trauma that frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa has experienced. From existential anguish to substance addition to suicidal ideation, Sgarbossa shares her pain and torment without fear. The combination of holding nothing back and the band’s intensely dark and darkly intense blend of sasscore, punk, mathcore, and metalcore. Their third album, Coup De Grâce, is no exception to this rule. However, unlike those two records, a different approach to lyrics were taken: The 12 tracks were funneled through lives of fictional characters within a noir-inspired world of the singer’s invention.

This method makes sense for this record as it begins with something that’s completely different from the band has ever made before. It’s designed to draw the listener back to a time and place that exists several decades in the past. It’s a Moulin Rouge-esque club that isn’t quite in the real world, but a parallel decadent and dystopian universe.

Connie Sgarbossa on Coup De Grâce:

“The record started as a visual idea because when it came to lyrics, I didn’t know what the f*ck to write at first. I’m not a drug addict, junkie anymore, so I’m not going to write another album like The Romance of Affliction … I can’t, and I don’t want to. So my mind wandered to the things that I love, like Frank Miller’s Sin City graphic novels, where there are all these stories interlaced within a city. That led me to think about noir and neo-noir and then pulp comics and novels from the 1940s and 1950s. Which started to make it all come together lyrically and thematically, where each different song can be a different tale of the city. ”

The album was recorded by Matt Squire at Mixwave Studios and has the truest sense of the word. It’s wholeheartedly ambitious. It’s a graphic novel in musical form that not only succeeds in creative its own creatively dark and noir universe, but in a manner where the characters truly inhabit the world thatwas specifically invented for them.

It’s nothing new for the band to change their sound as they do that with every record, but the level that it’s on is at an all-time high. Just like The Romance of Affliction proved that art doesn’t always sooth suffering as she attempted to take her life two weeks after the completion of the record. The album proves that you don’t  need to suffer to create something great.

For those whom love the band can catch new music live for the first time this spring when they hit the road with Better Lovers, Foreign Hands, and Greyhaven. It’s going to kick off on April 18 in Indianapolis. A few major stops amongst the San Diego, Seattle, and Minneapolis. Additionally,  SeeYouSpaceCowboy will be performing at Los Angeles’ Sound and Fury Festival in July.
