The Slackers are keeping their 17-year, festive tradition going in 2020 with a livestream of their annual holiday show on December 19.
The livestream will go out at 7:45 p.m. EST and will be available on-demand until December 22 at 7:45 p.m. EST. In usual Slackers style, the band have DJ support from Subatomic Sound System, Kung Fu Sound System, and Starjammer.
Starting in 2003 as a one-night stand at New York’s Knitting Factory (back when it was still located in Tribeca), by 2019, it had grown into a 21 date tour spanning the country. The last shows the band played were their 2019 holiday shows, ending with a weekend in New York City at Webster Hall and Boston at the Middle East.
The Slackers have also released some limited-edition 45s as tribute to holiday tours of past years. Lathe-cut by Revolution Vintage, the last few copies are available on the Slackers eBay.
Funds from the sales of tickets to the livestream and the 45s will go to the employee funds of Reggie’s Rock Club in Chicago, the Flamingo Cantina in Austin, and the National Independent Venue Relief Fund (NIVA).
As a band who tour regularly, the Slackers have had to satisfy their live itch with a series of livestreams. They’ve also used the time off the road to release two politically charged singles via Pirates Press Records: “Nobody’s Listening/Sleep Outside” and “Blue,” as well as the anti-Trump digital single “They Are Losing.”
David Hillyard, manager and saxophonist of the Slackers, says:
“After all we have been through in 2020, it was important for us as a band to celebrate with a holiday show. We are celebrating survival and endurance and trying to bring some hope and joy through music to our fans, friends, and family. We have really been lucky to have such a great community of people around us in 2020, and we want to play for them .”
