Sonic Youth have announced the release of In/Out/In, a record showcasing the impact of an influential spanning career.
In/Out/In, due out March 18, is set to reveal the last decade of Sonic Youth. These were not all recorded in one session but spread out over 2000-2010.
Following a formula of arrangement, the record kicks off with 2008 track “Basement Contender.” Fans receive a raw energy from the band at Kim and Thurston’s Northampton house, manifesting a simmering soundtrack.
“Machine” offers another instrumental track from The Eternal sessions and is a seething experiment in stop-start, rhythmic intensity among a mix of spiraling chord progressions. “Social Static,” from the Chris Habib/Spencer Tunick film of the same name, creates a sound of just that, electricity filling listeners ears and heightening sounds and the track progresses into what feels like a smokey abyss.
The final tracks round out the set, both pulled from a Three Lobed box set of various artists from 2011, Not the Spaces You Know, But Between Them: “In & Out ” recorded at a soundcheck in Pomona California in 2010. Rumbles fill out the track with echoing stickwork on the drums.
“Out & In ” from 2000 was recorded in their late downtown NYC studio and serves to close out this record’s last 12 minutes as a reminder of what they got. Graceful framework erupts into a magnetic frenzy before fading out to a close.

Sonic Youth have delivered releases as a unit but also has an array of shelved material. The band’s current Bandcamp lays out a great amount of it; there’s still more to be heard. In/Out/In converts mostly-unheard tracks, with a scope on the band’s post 2000-era.
