Like many artists fortunate enough to avoid a pandemic writer’s block, The Menzingers’ guitarist/vocalist Gregor Burnett took advantage of the time to write and record an album. His solo debut, Don’t Go Throwing Roses in My Grave, is out February 18 via Epitaph Records.
“The band couldn’t tour; I was going through a really difficult time, and I was stuck at home watching my family struggle with illness and death and hardship,” Burnett says. “The only thing I could do was write my way through it.”
The title track gives a first glimpse of how Burnett’s sound will function in a new setting. While his voice is distinctively recognizable still, the backing leans much more toward folk than punk. The accompanying video emphasizes that direction with pastoral scenes and Burnett pictured with an acoustic guitar on his shoulders and harmonica around his neck.
His Menzingers bandmates assisted in the project as well. Guitarist Tom May provided artwork while Eric Keen played bass and Joe Godino added percussion. Producer Will Yip (Title Fight, Tigers Jaw, Citizen), who has long worked with the band, handled the recording and took on drum duties.
