The Mountain Goats announced their new album Jenny from Thebes will come out on October, 27, and released their first single from the record, “Clean Slate.” Released through Merge Records, the collection of songs is a sequel to their beloved 2022 album, All Hail West Texas.
The band will also embark on a cross-country tour in support of the album.
“People like to hedge bets by using terms like ‘concept album,’ but let’s be clear, this is a rock opera about a woman named Jenny who buys a Kawasaki to ride as far away as she can from a town she’s been carrying on her shoulders too long,” the band say.
Jenny from Thebes is a lush collection of show tunes, pushing John Darnielle as a vocalist and the Mountain Goats as a band. It broadens the group’s sound and leans into influences like Godspell, Jim Steinman and The Cars. “Clean Slate” is an excellent representation of what is to come.
“’Clean Slate’ sets the scene: this is the house Jenny rents; these are the people who crash there when they need a place to stay; this is where she’s at in the process of becoming someone other than the keyholder she’s been,” the band say about the new single.
The Mountain Goats will be on tour this summer and fall. You can learn more about their album and tour here.
