Xasthur has released new single “Messenger Of Your Reflection” ahead of forthcoming album Disharmonic Variations due out July 5. Xasthur is the one-man dark American folk project of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Scott Conner founded back in the year of 1995, almost 30 years in and going strong.
Xasthur’s sound was forged in the black metal of the Nordic second wave but over the course of 10 albums, split-singles, EPs, etc. Its highly unique and depressive style became quite regarded within the extreme genre, comprising the core of what you hear now.
Xasthur states:
“Anyone can be the message—You are the message. Seeing a true reflection and conveying it. Elaborating on the reflection when you cannot or will not. I was thinking about how reality is a message, and how people cannot claim that they have one. I often see it for what it really is, or is not, and deliver it. Being a messenger of the truth.”
In 2010, Conner announced the end of Xasthur and the start of an acoustic dark folk project under the banner of Nocturnal Poisoning. In 2015, Conner made the choice to return to using the name Xasthur but insisted that his sojourn into black metal was over.
There is no guarantee regarding the musical direction Xasthur will take next. Expect the unexpected, whatever that may be or sound like. Whatever happens depends on what Conner feels and the creative muse which speaks to him.
