Pine Joins No Sleep Records, Announces ‘Pillow Talk’

To Pine: a verb meaning to suffer a mental and physical decline especially because of a broken heart. To miss and long for the return of. For Pine, No Sleep Records’ newest signee, the name says it all. The Ottawa post-punkers have a unique blend of emo-meets-shoegaze that’s as refreshing and cathartic as it is nostalgic – like putting on your favorite emo record from high school as an adult and relishing in the complicated teenage emotions you’ll never be able feel again.

Pine’s newest single, “Viable” (listen below), from their soon-to-be-released album Pillow Talk, showcases the band’s ability to blend vibrant bass lines and textural, washed out guitars with vocals that possess some of the same emotion and angst of early Taking Back Sunday. While it may be akin to early-00s, Long Island emo, Pine revamp the genre by keeping one foot in pop. The reverb and distortion never overtake Darlene Deschamps’ sorrowful, jaded vocals, allowing her melodies to shine through.

Deschamps spoke about the new song and how it was about an emotional flinch towards inevitable heartbreak.

“Viable is about falling for someone under not normal circumstances, and the battle with yourself on whether you’re ready for another relationship, worried for its failure.”

Pine are set to release Pillow Talk via No Sleep Records on June 9, 2017. The band couldn’t be more excited to join the label’s growing list of post-rockers. Deschamps says:

“No Sleep has already become such an integral part of our family and we’re more than happy to be on a label that has put their faith in so many great musicians.”

For No Sleep founder Chris Hansen, who found the band through Twitter (yes, it does happen!), was immediately struck by Deschamps’ powerful, emotive voice. He said:

“From the moment I heard Pine (by way of them liking a tweet, ha) I fell in love immediately with the music and Darlene’s voice. Beyond excited to see where this band goes. Pine 2k17.”
