We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of CLOAKZ’s music video for their song “Flies” (watch it below). The band comments on the video:
“The video for ‘Flies’ was a collaboration between myself and Young Heart Productions (Bill Dvorak and Micah Weisberg). We wanted to try something new and weird so we came up with the idea of shooting a ‘sloppy feast’ type of scene from a fly’s perspective, tied in with some performance shots. Bill had this really cool idea of shooting a big plastic tub of water while we dropped in different variations of food dye to get a washy/trippy type of effect. My wardrobe was totally made up on the spot and added to the weirdness of the video along with my creepy basement. Everything was shot in my South Philly apartment over the course of a weekend and a big bottle of Titos. We had a lot of fun with it and I’m looking forward to the next one. Keep an eye out!”
CLOAKZ is the project of South Jersey native and multi-instrumentalist Zachary Ciancaglini. Growing up close to Philadelphia, he played in various Philly bands up until 2008, when he and longtime band mate Sean Gavigan moved to Brooklyn and formed the garage-rock band Raccoon Fighter. The band helped him gain the confidence to start writing and recording his own songs, and in 2011, he released a solo demo album under the alias “Quotes.”
Ciancaglini relocated to Philly in 2014 and quickly started to construct his first batch of CLOAKZ songs. Traveling to Brooklyn on the weekends, he recorded a collection of tracks with engineer/producer Alex Lipsen (Phosphorescent, Nada Surf) at his studio in Greenpoint. The result is CLOAKZ’s debut EP, Semi-Autographic, released last spring. “Flies” is featured on that EP.
While Zac still frequents NYC with Raccoon Fighter, CLOAKZ has become his first real attempt at stepping away from behind the drums and exposing himself as a songwriter. Drawing influences from acts like Built To Spill, MBV and Spiritualized, along with more modern artists like Ty Segall and The War on Drugs, his sound features loud, fuzzed-out guitars, noisy layers of instrumentation, and raw vocals.
CLOAKZ will play Philly’s Kung Fu Necktie on March 16th (more info here).
