Album Premiere: Fortune Cove – Dear Happiness

Fortune Cove present their new album Dear Happiness, out November 22 on Four Chord Music. We caught up with the band about their forthcoming release.

What are you most excited about when it comes to the new record?
We are probably most excited just to get it out and into the world. From when we started the process up until now has been quite the road trip, and to see all the hard work finally transform into a polished, finished product is incredible. We even went with a vinyl release for this, which is a first for us. We recently released two videos of the first two singles off the record, and those are getting really positive responses. We can’t wait to see what everyone thinks of the rest of the songs on the record once it’s out.

What are some major themes on the record?
We touch on a couple different themes throughout the record that had a multitude of different impacts on us during the process of recording and putting the songs together. “Direction” was heavily based around feeling helpless and lost. We wanted that song to really encompass how much of an emotional ride life can be at times when you aren’t really sure where you’re headed or where you want to go. “Goodbye” touches a lot on how loss impacts people differently and how to move on and grow from that. In the end, the album more reads as a roadmap to recovery and happiness when dealing with different aspects of life.

What was the writing and recording process like?
Very long and gruesome. We started this whole process around four years ago, when we had a small collection of songs we were into recording. We wanted to do more longterm-plan recording with the studio we were at, so we decided to write a ton of songs on top of what we had while recording what we brought to the table initially. Ten grand and some years later, we were left with only six songs completed out into the world out of almost 20 we had decided to work on with no hope of receiving a finished product of the other 14. We decided instead of letting this crush and defeat us to look at the positive and push forward tracking the songs ourselves and working with close friend Sam Guaiana to craft the songs to reach their full potential. We couldn’t be happier with the product and can’t wait until you all can hear what we made.

Is there anything else you want to announce in terms of upcoming tours, shows, etc?
Recently, we released two music videos for the first batch of singles off the new record which we were very excited to get out. We also just started embarking on a Canadian/ North Eastern America tour with our close friends in Rival town and Letdown. We have a couple more shows planned for after the tour, so be sure to pay attention to the Facebook/Instagram/website announcements for those!

Who are some of your biggest influences?
We all listen to a wide range and variety of different kinds of music, but when it comes to writing, we all have some favorites we look up to. Some of those include The Starting Line, New Found Glory, Living with Lions, State Champs, Rufio, Real Friends, Green day, Blink 182, The Swellers, and This Time Next Year. We could go on and on with the list, but I think you guys get the idea. We all really love songs that have a lot of power and feeling behind them and tried to translate that into our own material on the record.

Where would you like to see the band in five years?
Five years from now, you will most definitely still catch us on stage doing the same thing we have been. Over the past couple years, figuring out our direction, we’ve been able to take it one step at a time and really make the release around these songs special. We plan on keeping the energy flowing using what we’ve learned in our time growing to keep moving forward, trying to secure bigger shows and opportunities to grow into a more professional band. Five years from now is a long time, but by then, we hope to have a couple more releases and tours to talk about.
