The fertile soil of RVA yields yet another excellent new harvest of savage punk rock. Northeast Regional unleashes a new EP, Fitness, on February 9. Three tracks of scathing rock ‘n’ roll exhibits this growing band since their 2023 full-length, Brand Managers of the Mid-Atlantic. Their savage punk rock has been honed on Fitness. This renders the tuneage to a leaner delivery.
Punk is versatile term, malleable to the creators’ visions. Northeast Regional’s brand pay heavy homage to Hot Snakes, The Hives, The Hellacopters, and RFTC. But, lets not limit the band’s ferocity. The unrestrained approach focuses on a rockin’ riff and than elaborates with speed and a raw attack of aggression and distortion. Think Drug Church, (early) The Bronx, and Dead Kennedys. On Fitness, the opener, “Agencies” is distilled progression. Move forward quickly. It harnesses the catchiness of The Chats with the caustic delivery of Night Birds, Knives Out, and Cancer Bats. “Isometrics” reins in the speed for stumbling swagger. Now, the garage influences are more apparent. Closer, “Timekeepers,” is a sullen, mid-tempo banger. The guitar line pulls you down into a regretful space effectively.
Fitness gives us a unabashed gander into this VA quintet. The band are on a trajectory to kick much ass. If you are in the DC area Friday check out the record release jam: February 9 at The Runaway with Darker Than and The Armors for $15 (cash only).
