French-based artist of Franco-Moroccan descent, Sophia Djebel Rose has been enamored with poetry from a very young age. In her 20s, she lived a largely nomadic life, which led to a new relationship to poetry as part of her lived experience. Inspired by folk traditions, Rose started adding music to her poetry, creating something dark and baroque yet with a haunting beauty all its own. Back in December, we debuted the video for her song “Blanche Biche,” a murder ballad adapted from the French-speaking medieval repertoire, off her upcoming album Sécheresse. Well, Sécheresse is due out on Monday, but now you can hear the entire album a few days early right here.
Pulling from elements of folk, Mediterranean music, and psychedelic elements, Sécheresse is a mesmerizing trip through the darkness that is always fascinating but never something to fear. Check out the full album below.
