Double Premiere: Pulley – ‘Write A Note If You Leave’ & Fire Sale – ‘An Archaic Construct’

Fire Sale and Pulley

For long-time punk fans, the name Pulley should sound pretty familiar as the California-based melodic skate punk act has been tearing it up since 1994. Fire Sale might be a band name punk fans are less familiar with, but the band members are a bit more recognizable: lead guitarist Chris Swinney (The Ataris/Brazil/Underminded), bassist Matt Riddle (Pulley/Face To Face/No Use For A Name/The Implants/22 Jacks), vocalist Pedro Aida (Ann Beretta/ShotClock/Fun Size/River City High), rhythm guitarist Brad Edwards, and drummer Matt Morris(Darlington/41 Gorgeous Blocks). Now the punk legends and the fledgling punk supergroup are teaming up for one hell of a split EP called Split Personality, which is out September 5 on Negative Progression Records.

Today, both bands are debuting songs of this banger of a split. Pulley pulls out “Write a Note If You Leave,” which is a classic mile-a-minute melodic skate-punk rager with a lot of heart and a furious drumbeat. Even with the ferocious punk style, it’s hard to hear this song without tearing up a little bit.

“Everyone out there has experienced loss, be it a family member, close friend, or even a band member,” the band explain about the song. “This song was inspired by the loss of my Mom, but I think lyrically it can apply to anyone’s situation. When we were young, the days before cell phones, whenever I left the house I had to leave a note for my Mom so she could know where I was. It’s basically a metaphor for my mom leaving this world; she wouldn’t leave the note, but at least I was able to be by her side when she finally passed. I miss her, and I miss that hand-written style of heartfelt communication.”

Next up we have Fire Sale with ‘An Archaic Construct,” a song that takes aim at outdated social constructs yet somehow has a strong heart all of its own. The melodies are the sugar to make the medicine go down, and the well-crafted lyrics are sharply insightful. “The song questions the manufactured ways in which we are expected to behave,” say the band about the meaning behind this one.
