Punk rock and rollers Blacklist Royals are set to release their new three-track EP, Doomsday Girl, out April 2 via Paper + Plastick Records.
New Noise are proud to premiere the EP in full below:
The band were rehearsing for the 10-year-anniversary celebration of their debut album (at The Fest 2020), Semper Liberi when the world went into lockdown. As a band known for relentlessly touring, and playing everywhere from punk squats to women’s prisons, the pandemic has hit founding members and twin brothers Nat & Rob Rufus, particularly hard.
Rob Rufus states:
“Like most punks, The Fest cancelation hit me hard. Then, I’m driving around listening to Bruce Springsteen broadcast a special radio show from quarantine, and he spins Blacklist Royals’ cover of ‘The Promised Land’ that we’d been practicing for our anniversary set! I couldn’t believe it! I took it as a sign, or some reminder that rock ’n’ roll must prevail, especially in hard times.
There’s a million things I wanna do when the world opens up. But, there’s nothing that swells my heart like the thought of being in a basement, playing loud as fuck, rocking and rolling with a bunch of punks dancing and drinking and singing along.”
Fans will be able to hear more new music from Blacklist Royals in the feature film adaptation of Rob Rufus’ memoir, Die Young With Me (Simon & Schuster). The book was an instant hit, winning the American Library Association Medal and being named one of the “Best Books of the Year” by Hudson Booksellers.
Rob comments on working on the movie during COVID times:
“We’d been working on songs for the movie, revisiting the lyrics Nat and I wrote as teenagers when I was in the hospital with Stage Four cancer and our world was completely upside down. This pandemic is the first time since then that my health—and my mortality—has been in the forefront of my mind. But now, mortality is on everyone’s mind. It’s like we’re all living in the Shadow of Death. So, we decided to face our dread the same way we did back in the day; by cranking it up to 11 and playing the end times rock even as the world burns down around us.”
Blacklist Royals will be playing the Doomsday Girl EP along with Semper Liberi at The Fest 2021 with original members.
Of The Fest show, Rob states:
“Doomsday Girl is about forgetting the stress of the times for a night and cutting loose. We wanna invite everyone to do that with us on April 22, when the band’s getting back together to play some jams for FEST AT HOME. Doomsday will still be there in the morning, we promise.”
