EP Premiere: Borts Minorts and Hug Victim – ‘Brut!’

Two self-proclaimed “veterans of weird” and brothers from other mothers, Borts Minorts (Arizona-based Christopher Carlone) and Hug Victim (NYC-based Timo Ellis of Netherlands) have joined forces to create their blistering, eight-song EP, Brut! Look no further: You can listen to the entire project right here at New Noise.

Borts Minorts creator Christopher Carlone has lived in San Francisco, New York City, and Los Angeles and garnered nominations from the SF Weekly for Best Experimental Music, on top of loads of glowing press. With his vast arsenal of spandex jumpsuits, musicians, dancers, and homemade instruments, he ecstatically blends the weirdest, structured, chaotic musical concepts of The Residents, while embracing the spirit and over-the-top showmanship of rock legends like David Lee Roth and Iggy Pop.

Hug Victim, otherwise know as vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Timo Ellis, has appeared on almost 100 album in total through the past 20 years. Outside of his band, Netherlands, he’s recorded and toured with a number of notable artists—like Yoko Ono, Cibo Matto, Sean Lennon, Joan As Police Woman, and Spacehog—and preformed and collaborated with the likes of Mark Ronson, John Zorn, The Melvins, Ween, The Lemonheads, Money Mark, White Hills, and Gibby Haynes. He traverses realms of rock, metal, funk, soul, and beyond, unifying the varied influences through his song crafting, technique, quirky experimentalism, and intensity.

The two artists are now sharing their collaborative album, Brut!, a whirlwind of tracks spanning about 12 minutes, though more action arguably happens in that time than albums with triple the length. Garlone provides vocals, drums, keyboards, guitar, pedals, skibass, stumptar, penny whistle and samples, with Ellis on guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion, and samples. It was produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ellis at Shame Party Studios in Brooklyn

Borts Minorts gives a bit of insight on the collaboration, “Being a friend of and huge fan of Timo Ellis and Netherlands, my dream was to record the EP at Shame Party Studios. I blasted through all the basic tracks in one super fun day with Timo and left it in his musically masterful and demented hands with the instructions to go apeshit with it. I had a few basic ideas for him but gave him full freedom to do whatever he wanted. When he sat me down for the final listening session, I literally fell out of my seat crying laughing!”

Hug Victim also shares his two cents ahead of the EP release, “Borts Minorts is a scorching, freewheeling, hilarious, yet super succinct creative manifestation of Chris’s incredible imagination, and an extremely well-realized, ultra-exuberant fusion of free-jazz, electro-noise punk, and sheer physical comedy. So, when he reached out to me to record, I of course immediately said yes. In my opinion, the combination of Chris’s insanely gleeful abandon and my own (similar) outsider sensibilities and producer chops make this record totally unique and powerful. In the end it’s super sharply executed, and doesn’t have a solitarily ounce of fat on it … I fucking love this record!”
