Track Premiere: ROOKIE – ‘Head Over Heels’

Bloodshot Records’ new compilation Too Late to Pray: Defiant Chicago Roots is out November 8, and features this ripper of a track from ROOKIE, a Tears For Fears cover of “Head Over Heels.”

Too Late to Pray: Defiant Chicago Roots is a redux of Bloodshot Records’ first release, For A Life of Sin. It is a current magnifying glass look at some—but not even close to all—of the artists and groups making unique and special music in the city’s roots scene. Some of the artists you may have heard of; some are woven so tightly into the fabric of the city, it’s hard to imagine a time without them; some we’ve claimed, whether they like it or not, as natives; some you might be hearing for the first time, and some you may never hear from again.

“We love Tears For Fears and wanted to put our own spin on the classic from Songs from the Big Chair,” ROOKIE says. “Eventually, the song made its way onto our setlist and has become something of a fixture when we play live. It’s also the first song we’ve recorded in our own Chris Devlin’s studio where he oversaw production, so the song has a lot of sentimental value to us.

“We feel super lucky to be a part of Bloodshot’s 25th anniversary compilation alongside some fantastic musicians.”

If you’re in Chicago, you can check out the album release show on November 9 at Workshop 4200/Smashed Plastic, featuring performances by ROOKIE, Wild Earp & the Free For Alls, Big Sadie, David Quinn, and The Dyes. Snag tickets here.
