Track-by-Track: Fight Back Mountain – Death and the Miser

Fight Back Mountain

Like Poets Do

This is actually the oldest song on the record; we almost recorded it for our last album, “Lavender Sky.” We decided to hold off and put it on our next release, which worked out since we ended up kinda writing the whole album around it. The record is loosely about a couple on the rocks, one of whom is a girl with deep emotional problems, and the other who is a wanna-be internet celebrity.

Death and the Miser

We named this one “Death and the Miser” after the painting by Hieronymus Bosch, and thought the name was cool enough to name the entire album after it. In the recording, the guitars during the verses are actually four or so different takes all spliced together to get that effect.

Scot-Free

“Scot-Free” is one of those songs where a band writes a song about what it’s like to be in a band. So relatable, right?

Foreman

Lyrically, this is definitely the darkest moment on the record. Musically, I got the idea for the riff from the Super Nintendo game Foreman: For Real. Look it up.

Sticker Book

This is my favorite ever song by Fight Back MTN, and I think it should be your favorite song by us too. I remember the first time we played it live, one of our friends came up to us and said “What was that song, dude? Holy shit.” That’s when I knew it was good.

A Long Winter

I was listening to nothing but ’80s thrash metal the week that I wrote the riff for this song, and I think you can kinda tell.

P is for Psycho

Each release by Fight Back MTN is legally required to have a Simpsons reference as a song title, and this is us meeting our quota for this record.

No Recourse

One of the guys in the cheering chorus at the end, Nate, said this song has “Madball Riffs.” I’ll let you decide that for yourself.

Crowdfunded Surgery

This song is about Youtube apology videos. It’s written from the perspective of the ‘Youtube Apologizer,’ kind of like those old Dead Kennedys songs where the song is written from the perspective of the bad guy.

Trouble and Havoc

This is the last song we wrote for the album. I basically wanted to fill out the album with a stupid, simple, easy-to-play song. The title name-checks our two cats and the song details a stormy relationship between a couple who always find new ways to bring conflict into each other’s lives.

Arranging a Funeral

We got the name of this song from one of the many weird VHS tapes that are featured on RedLetterMedia’s Youtube show Best of the Worst. I can’t remember what episode the ‘Arranging a Funeral’ tape is from, though. The last yell of this song was the final thing we recorded for the album, which knocked me out cold.

The House Where No One Sleeps

Coming back to the internet culture sub-theme throughout this album for the closer. The title of this song was taken from a video by the supernatural / spooky Youtuber “Chills.” Specifically, it’s from the amazing piece of content called “15 Scary Videos Post Malone Won’t Be Able to Handle.” I think it’s like halfway through the video if you’re looking for it.
