Richmond indie rockers Ages are gearing up for the release of their debut full-length album, Must be nice, out February 11 through Ossein Records.
Listen to the band’s latest single “Sidewalk Rooftop” below:
The Virginian quartet draws influence from an eclectic group of artists including Pinback, Nick Cave, Neko Case, Shellac, Jesus Lizard, and Peter Gabriel.
Vocalist and guitarist Adrienne Shurte is well known in the Richmond, Virginia music scene and, for over the past decade, Shurte has played in Magnus Lush, Fire Bison, and Hail Hydra (Curtis Grimstead of The Fest and Rorschach Records).
Each band informs the next and has evolved into a vibrant and eclectic sound that we now hear in Ages. Shurte has homed in on uncomfortable aspects of life while juxtaposing her lyrics with sparkling and sometimes even soothing compositions.
Weaving empathy and weariness is a common theme explored in the new album. Must be nice was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Bryan Walthall (Camp Howard, Antiphons, Unholy Thoughts) in Richmond, VA. at Stereo Image Recording Studio.
On the track’s release, Shurte states:
“A lyrical technique I use when I write songs is to change the identity of the storyteller throughout the verses. This gives some of the song’s manic undertones. ‘Sidewalk Rooftop’ switches from third person to first person as the main character plays the role of the antagonist and the protagonist in the song due to being homeless and suffering from bipolar disorder. The main character ends up being arrested by police, and there is a misunderstanding of what is fact and what is fiction.”
