Track Premiere: Crazy and the Brains – ‘Fantasy’

Crazy and the Brains

New York/New Jersey art punkers Crazy and the Brains are back, and they’re ready to tear shit up all over again. Formed by Christoph Jesus from open gig nights in New York’s Lower East Side, the band has grown from an acoustic punk duo to a full-fledged, six-piece punk band with a very unique style. Now they’re releasing their first single off of an upcoming album they’re working on with Rancid’s Tim Armstrong for his Epitaph subdivision Hellcat Records.

Today, the single they’re releasing is called “Fantasy,” a ringing punk anthem about perseverance and passion that has a classic, early punk feel with modern pop-punk hooks. “Throughout life there have been many voices that have attempted to convince me to live small or that my biggest dreams are only fantasies,” explains Jesus about the track. “This song is an alternative perspective. It’s an encouragement to create your identity as you see fit. It’s an expression of dedication to your passions and the people you love through good and bad.”

You can hear Armstrong’s influence throughout the song, right down to Jesus’ vocal drawl that is reminiscent of Armstrong’s own singing style. In fact, the song was mostly improvised by Armstrong and Jesus in the studio, with Jesus saying that “the dude who wrote all my favorite songs is sitting next to me writing songs with me. When it came time to sing, I improved my instinctual gut feelings. The lyrics turned out to be reflective of everything it took to get here.”
