Yesterday was the one year anniversary of the passing of Tomas Lindberg, a man whose legacy stretches across both metal and punk, having fronted At The Gates, Grotesque, The Great Deceiver, Disfear, The Crown, Skitsystem, and the grindcore supergroup Lock Up. Today, Canadian sludge‑soaked grind unit Culled are paying tribute to Lindberg’s influence on them by covering the Disfear track “Deadweight.”
Speaking about the cover, vocalist Shane Hawco of Culled says:
“With the first anniversary of his passing from cancer coming up, we wanted to pay tribute to his legacy by recording a cover of the song “Deadweight”. Not only is this d-beat masterpiece a sonic triumph in the Disfear discography, but lyrically it is still very poignant to today’s charged climate and fits with Culled’s stance lyrically and emotionally, and is impactful from the very first verse into the chorus…
“Propagating, entertaining, Rewriting and censoring
Our history desecrated, adjust, adapt, obey
Teachers, media, politicians, and, yeah, your parents as well
Are either bought or just equally fucked
It’s a one-way communication, A deadweight population
It’s a one-way communication; I won’t conform, no fucking way!“
The cover is a rip-roaring crust-meets-grind extravaganza that you’ll want to check out below. Proceeds from the digital release will be donated to The Alberta Cancer Foundation.
