Track Premiere: Die! Die! Die! – ‘Losing Sight, Keep On Kicking’

Fresh from a global pandemic outbreak, New Zealand trio Die! Die! Die! Return to their original line-up for their most urgent and well-honed album to date, This Is Not An Island Anymore, out February 18.

Listen to the album’s lead single “Losing Sight, Keep On Kicking” below:

Since their debut in 2005, Die! Die! Die! have blended a powerful and infectious concoction of post-punk, noise pop, shoegaze, lo-fi, and punk rock into one massive sounding whole.

After recording their debut album with Steve Albini (Shellac, Nirvana, PJ Harvey) in Chicago in 2005, Die! Die! Die! have worked with producers including Shayne Carter, Nick Roughan (The Skeptics), Chris Townend (Violent Femmes), and have written and recorded albums in New York, Dunedin, London and rural France.

Their indispensable collection of records, and their intense and unflinching live show, continue to drive their connection with audiences across the globe. Both are a telling reminder of why Die! Die! Die! are one of the most enduring and unapologetic bands to ever emerge out of New Zealand.

The group’s latest single, “Losing Sight, Keep On Kicking,” is an explosive anthem and bolstered by a return to their original line-up, bringing original bassist Lachlan Anderson back to the fold to join bandmates Andrew Wilson (guitar/vocals) and Michael Prain (drums).

On the track’s release, Willson states:

“This song comes down to resilience and reflection of what works and what definitely doesn’t. In Aotearoa, New Zealand, in Te reo Māori, there is a word, ‘Mauri,’ which means ‘life principle, life force, and source of emotions.’ I had totally lost all of those things for a long time, so that’s why I say this song is about finding your Mauri and not giving up—keep on kicking—no matter what, and sometimes, it will work out better than you could imagine.

“Musically, Mikey and Lachlan are so locked in, which is when DDD is the best. There was no layering of the guitars for this song; instead, I played through four guitar amps all the time, all set with different individual tones to help get the sound we wanted. With Lachlan back in the band and DDD being active again, it means so much to all of us; it’s definitely not the same as it used to be, but that is the best for all of us. Thank you so much for listening.”
