It’s Halloween, and, for some, that means dressing up in a costume as a means of escape; for others, it means donning a costume that makes you feel more like yourself.

In 2022, our old friends Hayley Cain and Dr. Cain Esq., the husband-and-wife team behind self-described “poolside glitter punks” Hayley and the Crushers, made the move from California to Detroit. Now, to celebrate their new home, they’re going as Detroit proto punks for Halloween, debuting their brand new cover of the classic punk tune “Lust for Life” via Kitten Robot Records.

The track is, of course, originally by Detroit’s favorite son, Iggy Pop, and served as the opening and title track to his sophomore solo album in 1977, which was produced by the late music legend David Bowie.

“Covering (Iggy Pop’s) ‘Lust for Life’ felt like a way to say thanks to this city, even as we continue to make ourselves more at home here,” explains Hayley Cain about the cover. The cover fuses sunny, California pop punk with the grittier side of Detroit-based proto punk to create a true love child of two important punk scenes. It’s the perfect addition to your Halloween party playlists for tonight. Check out the electrifying cover below:
