Yonkers, New York’s Honey Daze are making a name for themselves for their unique combination of shoegaze, grunge, and post-hardcore, but now the latest chapter of the band opens up with the introduction of vocalist Sean Dowling. Adding a dynamic vocal quality and emotionally powerful lyrics, Dowling’s addition promises to bring the band to the next level of their craft.
Today, the band are debuting their song “Paste,” the first song with Dowling and their first single off upcoming EP Another Habit to Break. The track is a swirling mass of melodic shoegaze with a healthy dash of hardcore and a mix of clean and unclean vocal styles. Ushering in the band’s newest era, “Paste” promises a new beginning that will open new doors for the band.
“‘Paste’ is a song about feeling lost in the world,” explains Dowling, “walking around feeling like you don’t belong anywhere and sticking out like an open wound. It was written at a time when I was dealing with a lot of internal family issues, and I felt like I carried that strife with me everywhere weather I wanted to or not. There’s a paranoia in wondering if other people can tell when you’re really going through it, and also a bit of shame in feeling like you might be bringing people down just by being there. Ultimately It’s also a song about resilience and realizing you may be the only person you can rely on in certain moments. Nobody is going to save you even if they wish they could, and pushing through is the only way out.
“The song was written last summer, and looking back on it now, it does feel like a triumph of just getting to a better place,” Dowling adds. “The circumstances may not have changed, but my mindset did, and I was able to piece things back together. I guess the lesson is, keep holding on. Things can and will get better. It just might take longer than you’d expect at times. It’s also a message for the people who want to kick you while you’re down and not feeling whole at a given moment. Make sure you tell them to their face to get fucked. It helps the healing.”
