Award-winning singer-songwriter Nicole Marxen burst onto the scene with her 2021 solo debut Tether which was heralded for its gothic atmosphere, haunting melodies, and lush synths. She continues in the same vein with her upcoming follow-up album, Thorns, which is out on August 9.
Today, Marxen is debuting the lurching darkwave single “The Executioner” off Thorns. Echoing with dark beauty, “The Executioner” is a foreboding tune that builds up a sense of anxiety and impending doom. “I wrote ‘The Executioner” from a place where I thought things couldn’t possibly get any worse,” explains Marxen, “but then they did. My day job’s main client at the time was The Richards Group. Nobody knew what was going to happen. We had no control over the situation, and yet were directly impacted. I kept moving through swells of rage and devastation, I felt utterly powerless.”
