Vancouver indie-punk-pop trio Night Court started during the pandemic as three lifelong friends—Emilor (drums/vox), Dave-O (guitar/vox), Jiffy (bass/vox). The members began emailing song ideas to each other. While most other bands are just putting out the album they wrote during the pandemic now, Night Court, having started at the beginning of the pandemic, are now gearing up to release their fourth full-length, called $hit Machine, due out November 1 on Recess Records.
Today they’re debuting their latest single off their upcoming album called “Mistakes Become You.” A crunchy, sugar-coated, noisy pop-punk track, it’s as if the haunting melodies of the Pixies’ “Alec Eiffel” were played on Fisher Price instruments by The Ramones through a tin can and string, which is a long way of saying it’s absolutely brilliant.
“Evolution is a series of mutations that make some living things slightly better at living,” says Dave-O, explaining the song. “If you are alive, then you are the result of countless anomalies—mistakes quite literally become you. On the much smaller scale of a person’s life, I think it’s sorta similar—We’re shaped by the millions of mistakes that we make ourselves and that others make for us. As a recovering perfectionist, I’m trying to live in a world where mistakes can be worn openly … perhaps even becomingly. Super-duper clever stuff going on here.”
