Track Premiere: Nopes – ‘Under the Leather’

Nopes are a four-piece noise-punk band from Oakland, CA.  Formed in October 2014, they share a common sonic ground with late ’80s/mid ’90s Touch and Go, SST, and AmRep bands.

Nopes have released two albums and two EPs, played countless gigs in bars, warehouses, and living rooms around the Bay Area, and completed three DIY tours of the Western and Southern U.S. in a cramped Toyota Prius.  Throughout, they gained a reputation for their high energy and incredibly sweaty live shows, often involving various hi-jinx and occasional food products.

Tracking for new album Djörk was done in one day at the Atomic Garden with Jack Shirley, but the album itself has been a long time in the works for a band who routinely write songs in the two-minute range.

Nopes are currently hibernating during the pandemic, making use of their time to raise chickens, learn animation, and explore new musical extremes.  They look eagerly forward to a return to live activities and new ways to push the fringes of punk further into the weird, heavy, and raw.

Check out our premiere of Nopes’s song “Under the Leather” below:

“Under the Leather” will appear on The Nopes’ forthcoming album Djörk, which will drop via Magnetic Eye Records on January 29.

On their new song, Nopes have the following to say:

“This one was written about experiences with people who act like they have something to prove. Tough exteriors, but just total narcissistic babies under the leather.”
