Los Angeles-based shoegaze group Osnova were founded in 2018 by guitarist Jean-Claude Vorgeack, or JC for short, a former music journalist and DJ for KXLU FM in LA. An avid music fan, JC’s love of alternative rock knows no bounds. After years bouncing from one project to the next, Osnova is the cumulation of a career dedicated to rock music. Rounding out the act are drummer Sam Ribeyro and vocalist Caroline McLaughlin, the trio released their self-titled EP in 2022 and followed it up the next year with the single “Octavian” B-side “For Selene.”
Today, they’re debuting their latest single, “Waiting for June,” which will be streaming everywhere tomorrow. An ethereal and eerie track, its haunting melodies will linger with you for days. This is a reminder of the mesmerizing power of shoegaze music.
“‘Waiting for June’ is about looking back on what you’ve gained and lost while growing and changing throughout your childhood,” explains McLaughlin about the single. “The title itself comes from that feeling you got when you were a kid—always looking forward to the next fun thing, the school year to end, the summer to start. But when it’s all over is when you realize that what was so special was being in those moments you wanted to pass. And what’s left is the nostalgic romanticizing of it all.”
“Musically, Sam and I share an affinity for 90’s trip-hop,” JC adds. “So we try to sneak that in whenever possible. You can hear the influence in the verses with the sampled drums and effected vocals at the end of the second verse. The aesthetic of the music video is also pretty ’90s-inspired.”
