Track Premiere: Parker Woodland – ‘Jets’

Parker Woodland

Combining indie rock, pop-punk, and psychedelia with an activist message, Austin, Texas-based band Parker Woodland are making a name for themselves with their anti-racist, pro LGBTQ+, socially progressive message and lifestyle as well as their outstanding live shows. Made up of members Erin Walter (vocals, bass), Andrew Solin (guitar), and Keri Cinquina (drums), all of whom have been long-time fixtures of Austin’s indie music scene, the band bring experience while also presenting a fresh new project.

Their debut album There’s No Such Thing As Time is due out on September 6 via Flak Records, and it promises to be chock full of shout-along anthems that will make you want to throw your fist in the air in protest while dancing to the catchy hooks.

“This is a record for anybody who needs joy in their life,” says Cinquina. “Anyone struggling with inner demons or is dealing with grief. We want to be a light in someone’s day.”

“We believe that music can change the world,” adds Walter. “The inspirational sparks for our songs come from grappling with heavy shit, like the destruction of the planet and the fight for trans rights. We start in those places, emotionally, then we look to see how we can extend the message and music to be life-giving to everyone.”

Today they’re debuting the music video for their latest single off the album, called “Jets.” With a slow, simmering beat, powerfully confident femme vocals, a touch of tambourine, and some big, chunky guitars, this song is the sugar to make the socially progressive medicine go down.

“Have you ever seen those refrigerator magnets that say, ‘Leap and the net will appear?'” asks Walter. “Well, I know they’re meant to be encouraging, but I saw one in a shop and thought, “damn, that’s a low bar.” I want to leap and have the feeling of flying, of freedom, of release.

“When guitarist Andrew Solin first joined Parker Woodland, I heard this guitar line he wrote, and I immediately knew this was the music for that feeling. Especially during the pandemic, when I was stuck at home and grieving so hard, I longed for that sensation where ‘the jets kick in’ and you can do anything. The lines ‘we remember who we’ve been, catch a ride on a tailwind’ are about finding yourself again after a loss.

“For anyone going through something difficult—and that’s so many of us—I hope Parker Woodland songs can be those kickass anthems that pick you up, get your fist pumping in the air, singing into your hairbrush or belting it out in the car. In ‘Jets,’ there’s an epic moment near the end when I wail, ‘it’s your life to live so live it / you’ve got love to give so give it / take a leap of faith before it’s too late.’ It gets me every time. We all need to be reminded to live and love to the fullest.”
