Track Premiere: Regan Ashton – ‘Poorwill’

Regan Ashton
Regan Ashton is a Chicago-based singer-songwriter originally hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah. For 13 years, Ashton was a founding member and bassist for the SLC-based melodic punk band Problem Daughter. Now he’s working on his own solo project, with his new album Infinite Pest due out summer 2024, from Burro Borracho Records. Worlds collide as Ashton’s love of punk, folk, and country all shine equally on this record.

“Most of the songs on this record are three to 13 years old,” explains Ashton. “They have always meant a lot to me and have been on every set I’ve played since. However, during the last couple of years, I found I have been relating to them less and less. This album is a bit of a goodbye to certain parts of my past and ends on an optimistic note, which is new. While I still struggle with a lot of what has happened in the last 16 years, my life has changed completely, and those moments no longer define me.

“Later, old pain. Peace the fuck out.”

We were fortunate enough back in January to premiere the video for Ashton’s song “Resume.” Today we are premiering a new single, “Poorwill,” a dark, country tune about addiction. It’s got a country twang and a gorgeous haunting melody that takes on an eerie quality that lingers with you long after the track is over.  In a way, addiction becomes the spirit that haunts this already melancholy song.

Ashton had this to say about the track: “I wrote this song while getting clean with a friend. We moved to their sister’s place away from where we grew up, away from our old friends and the lives we were determined to shed. My dear friend, whom I will not name, would cut their prescribed Suboxone in half and give me the second piece. Honestly, I don’t know where I would be now without them. I am happy to report that they are doing great, and we haven’t touched the stuff since.”
