Death metal trio Shock Withdrawal are still relative newcomers to the scene, but they’re definitely a name you’re going to be hearing more of soon. Made up of members of other veteran metal acts (Maruta, Mos Generator, Nitesoil, etc.), the band brings their history with them to the table on their upcoming debut full-length The Dismal Advance, out March 15 via Brutal Panda Records.
Today, the band are debuting the title track off the new album. “The Dismal Advance” is a brief burst of extreme energy that doubles down on everything that makes death metal great. It’s as if someone took all the energy they had and somehow doubled it to be unleashed in this sonic onslaught. Even at under 90 seconds, this track delivers an extreme experience that lives up to a name like Shock Withdrawal.
“It’s a song about watching someone you love die, and trying to cope with loss,” explains the band. “Life feels like a series of chaotic randomized events. I don’t believe in the ‘everything happens for a reason’ mantra, things just happen. There was no sort of positive silver lining out of my best friend dying of cancer. I wrote the lyrics for this song about that experience. Being in that moment, in that hospice. Reflecting on the good times, the bad times, and the things you wish you could have done differently.
“Anyhow, If he was still around, he’d give me a hard time for being so dramatic lol. This one is dedicated to Kristopher Alan Pabon.”
