Track Premiere: Sidewinder – ‘Guardians’

Sidewinder

They might not have been around long, having been formed just back in 2021, but Sidewinder are already making themselves an important part of New Zealand’s exploding hard rock/stoner scene. With their high-energy performances that combine riff-heavy psych and stoner metal with classic delta blues, Sidewinder have earned themselves spots playing shows with the likes of Orange Goblin and Sasquatch. Following up their 2022 album Vines, the band are releasing their sophomore album Talons on August 23 on Wyrmwood Records.

Today, they’re debuting their latest single off of Talons called Guardians. With a light, bluesy opening that gives way to crushing riffs, all the while being guided by a powerful, bluesy femme vocal, this is a unique and powerful track that’s as devastating as it is beautiful.

“From a rhythmic perspective ‘Guardians’ came together after stripping away what was unnecessary and focusing solely on the groove,” explains guitarist Thomas Rousell. “It’s the perfect representation of what Sidewinder’s sound is. The track itself is a ballad from goddess Freya’s perspective, for the man she adored—Odr. A timeless, lusty, love affair that mixes light and dark with brutal finesse, both of which are high features throughout the entire album.”
