Founded in 2013 by singer/guitarist Vic Lazar, bassist Mike Jung, and drummer Steve Aguilera, and maintaining the same lineup throughout, Los Angeles-based post-hardcore band Some Gifts are a politically-inclined band bound together by their love of angular rock songs. They’re gearing up for the release of their fourth album and label debut record Misguided, which is being released on Killer Kern Records and promises to be a crescendo in their evolution as a rock band.
Today, they’re debuting their latest single, “WTFU,” a rallying cry in response to the mean-spirited attacks of the ultra-right. With those, yes, angular guitars that manage to find themselves somewhere between Fugazi and Sonic Youth, the song is a punchy bolt of lightning that delivers its criticism with a blunt force.
“I wrote WTFU as a play on the word ‘woke’ being a derogatory term,” explains Lazar about the lyrics. “I wanted to speak out against a certain ‘the cruelty is the point’ style of politics that lacks human decency and compassion.
“We’re all fans of angular ‘90s indie rock, so the riffs came together quickly on this one,” he continues, describing the musical side of things. “We had an idea at the last minute to ask Dylan Geurtsen from the band Niner Niner to do backing vocals, and this is our first song with a guest vocalist. We’re happy we were able to record again with Ben Moore who just makes everything sound in-your-face and awesome.”
