Track Premiere: Somerset Thrower – ‘Motor City’

Somerset Thrower

Long Island-based rock band Somerset Thrower are finding the balance between the modern and the nostalgic. Built by four local friends on a base of punk and hardcore roots, soaked in nostalgic melodies, they’ve created a sound with a step in the past and one in the future. Growing a reputation in their 10 years as a band and with the success of their Falling Swingers EP and subsequent Paint My Memory LP, they’ve had the honor of sharing stages with the likes of Rival Schools, Taking Back Sunday, Supercrush, Glassjaw, Drug Church, The Movielife, Iron Chic, Taking Meds, and more. Now they’re gearing up for the release of their next album, Take Only What You Need to Survive, which is due out on July 11 through Smartpunk Records.

Today, the band are debuting the visualizer for the single “Motor City” off the upcoming album. With its rich guitars and gorgeous melodic elements, it has a modern urgency while still reveling in the emo styles of the early 2000s. This is melodic punk at its nostalgic best.

“We played a run of shows with Taking Meds in the winter of 2022, and the first night, we met was in Detroit,” the band explain. “During that time, I feel like we were all reminded why we started bands as kids. ‘Motor City’ is an ode to playing music with your friends. It’s about being in a band. You’re gonna do it whether they’re listening or not.”

Check out the visualizer below.

Take Only What You Need to Survive is out July 11, and you can preorder it from Smartpunk Records. Make sure to follow Somerset Thrower on Instagram to keep up with the latest from this up-and-coming rock artist.
