Started in 2016, Turnpike Gates is the solo project of Philadelphia-born/Jersey-based singer-songwriter Ryan Smith. With a unique blend of punk, pop, and alternative, Turnpike Gates’ EPs Almost There and City in Heat have been making serious waves. Now Smith follows that up with his debut album Not Myself Today, which drops tomorrow, and which takes a stark look at life in a post-pandemic American city.
Today, Turnpike Gates is debuting the title track off the album. “This album is the most honest I’ve ever been with my songwriting, maybe the most honest I’ve ever been in any part of life,” Smith explains about the new track. “‘Not Myself Today’ is the title track and one of my favorites on the album. A lot of people are in the same boat these days — struggling with their mental health. I don’t know if this song provides any consolation, but I do think people will be able to relate.”
The spirited anthem of frustration seems to offer a glimmer of hope in all of its pop-punk glory. The hooky track combines gorgeous pop elements with a powerful energy that gives a cathartic emotional release to a post-pandemic society. Check out the track below.
Not Myself Today is out tomorrow and you can pre-order it on Bandcamp. Follow Turnpike Gates on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok for future updates.
