When making noise, it helps to have some brass instruments in the band. The Leeds-based noise punk Volk Soup formed in 2020 by Harry Jones (vocals, guitar, lyrics) and Ryan Walker (bass) but, for obvious reasons, their first performance was delayed until October 2021. By then they added drummer Luc Gibbons and started recording, but their full potential wasn’t realized until the addition of Ryan Geach (saxophone), Luca Vitale (trumpet), and George Orton (guitar) in 2022. Now the fully realized six-piece are gearing up for the release of their debut LP 10p Jazz, out Friday, October 3 via Dipterid Records (digital and vinyl) and Cruel Nature (cassette).
Today, the band are debuting their single “Professionalism Debunked” off the upcoming album. With elements of actual jazz and a swinging beat, the noisiness of the track adds a distinctive punk edge to turn it into a demented jazz tune from the depths of hell itself, and I mean that as a compliment.
“It’s a song with a simple sentiment: Don’t take your job too seriously,” explains Jones about the track. “It is essentially demanded of a person that they lose vast swathes of their precious time on Earth or else face a cruel and untimely death. With this demand in mind, I think it’s important to remember that you have a moral imperative to take from a place that so persistently takes from you. Be that sick days or time on the toilet or taking a brief moment to behavior in a way that would otherwise be considered ‘unprofessional.'”
