Ships Have Sailed are the indie-rock duo made up of guitarist Will Carpenter and drummer Art Andranikyan. Known for their positive and upbeat spirit in their music, the band have created a unique pop sound that’s infectious and endearing. In the midst of the global pandemic in 2022, the band released their album Ages, most of which was co-produced by Dan Sadin (MØ, Joy Oladokun). They’ve been putting out one impressive single after another since then and recently were honored by having a song featured in the Season 19 finale of Grey’s Anatomy.
Today, we’re spotlighting the duo’s most recent single “Walking into Walls,” which came out on March 28. The delicate piano ballad is a tad melancholy but somehow still has an underlying feeling of hope to it.
“Our relationships can be as impactful to us as humans as our own inherent personalities,” explains Carpenter regarding the song. “They can shape us if we let them, in good ways or bad. We can learn from them, or outgrow them, and by ‘relationships’ I mean not only those we have with other humans, but with anything around us—our relationships with our world, our vices, our emotions—We each represent a complex web of connective, shifting responses and reactions to every single ‘thing’ we encounter and especially those that we deliberately hold near to ourselves.
“’Walking Into Walls explores this very abstract idea by simplifying it towards a single, human relationship,” he adds. “Our relationships with humans can be as habit-forming as our relationships with mind altering substances, exercise, daily routines, and not always in a positive way. As much as we can grow to love things, rely on them, miss them when they’re no longer there, it’s equally important to be able to recognize when they aren’t serving you anymore and be comfortable letting them go—understanding that, for a time, we will feel lost when we do.”
