“Happy The Longest Day Of The Year” is the newest single from long-running indie lovelies, 27.
Since their last full-length release (Brittle Divinity, 2010), the band have amended their lineup by adding Adam McGrath (Cave In, Wear Your Wounds, etc) on guitar and have teased us with a 7” single, and today they have a brand new song to help us celebrate the Summer Solstice!
Vocalist and guitarist Maria Christopher shares a little history and inspiration for the song;
“Every winter from time to time my mother and I will remind each other how many days it is until the day of longest daylight. It helps when it’s bitterly cold out and we can look forward to the countdown to warmer days. One year she surprised me by sending me a hand painted card to celebrate the occasion, with the greeting “Happy The Longest Day The Year”. Now it’s a become a thing with us, sending homemade cards to each other every year, hers hand painted, and mine a photo. As with most of my lyrics, the meaning is often layered and much of the song is about appreciating the time spent with loved ones.”
The song is taken from the upcoming full-length, A Billion Searchlights, which is due out on July 30 via Mind Over Matter Records. As a lead single, this song showcases their approach to much of the album where an idea was brought into rehearsal and then built upon as a full band. There was a lot of collaboration throughout the album, including some guest appearances from Alex Rose from Minus The Bear, performing under the moniker Nightblind.
As we approach the longest day of the year, enjoy the quarantine-filmed video for “Happy The Longest Day Of The Year” and celebrate that some of the long days of the past year are behind us, and we can look forward to additional hours of sunlight in the very near future.
