Video Premiere: Bryony Williams – ‘Trip Me Up’

Bryony Williams

Bryony Williams is on her way to becoming Birmingham, U.K.’s favorite sad-girl indie rocker. With an infectious style of indie-pop, Williams has been the opening act for a lot of local shows of touring acts like Liz Lawrence, Peaness, Hazel English, isaac gracie, A.A. Williams, and The Goon Sax. She runs the music magazine Grrrl Groannn, which aims to increase gender-inclusiveness in the indie rock scene.

Williams has a new two-part concept album coming out later in 2024, and today she’s debuting the first single off the upcoming album called “Trip Me Up.”

“Originally written back in 2017 whilst watching the cult classic, The Virgin Suicides, on repeat to analyse for my film studies class on my media degree,” explains Williams about the new single, “with this song, I began writing a response to the storyline and themes entangled in the narrative of the film. This response, admittedly, was only the first verse and chorus, and only did the song find its final lyrics in the recording process of the album in 2022.

“At the core of Trip Me Up, I essentially wanted to revisit typical old school, prom-like romance we get from films made in the 90s, but with a modern twist. The narrative throughout the track though is through a female lens and shows the frustrations and complications that young love encounters (or at least like it is in the movies) whilst on a journey of reclaiming a sense of self and power in this storyline.”

“Trip Me Up” is a boppy, bass-driven indie-pop ditty with an infectious hook and romantic, echoing melodies. The energy is absolutely effervescent on this track. The video sees Williams letting loose a little bit and indulging in some retro-technology while her awkward dancing becomes oddly endearing. Check out the video below.
