Video Premiere: Dead History – ‘Perpetual Motion’

Dead History

Dead History have announced the release of incendiary single “Perpetual Motion,” available for streaming May 16. The up-tempo, post-hardcore anthem is the second advance track to be revealed off of Departures, the Minneapolis-based quintet’s highly-anticipated sophomore LP, arriving June 6 via Landland Colportage (first single “Good Buddy” is streaming now). Limited edition vinyl is available for pre-order via Dead History and Landland’s Bandcamp pages.

“‘Perpetual Motion’ is just a blast of raw, unfiltered energy,” says bass player John McEwen. “We wanted to something more driving and intense than what we’d done on our first record, which was written and recorded pre-pandemic. There was a lot of pent-up steam to blow off when we started in on the material for Departures.”

“This was one of the easiest songs to come together for Departures,” adds guitar player Matthew Rezac. “It was written in about the time it takes to listen to it. Me and John and David (Jarnstrom, drums) just hashed out the basic arrangement in an inspired burst while waiting for the other guys to show up to rehearsal. Brock (Specht, lead guitar) added some counterpoint and color, and Brad (Senne, vocals) quickly came up with a great vocal hook.”

Directed by Dante Della Maggiore, the video for “Perpetual Motion” was shot at various Dead History recording sessions and live shows in the Twin Cities—with additional time-lapse footage of nighttime driving through downtown Minneapolis mixed in with the band footage.

“Movement and transit are sort of recurring themes on Departures,” says vocalist and lyricist Brad Senne. “With ‘Perpetual Motion’ being more of a rager, it really conjured images of just powering through whatever is in your way—and there’s a lot in everyone’s way these days. But, we’ve got to keep on trucking, we’ve got to get through it. There’s no other option. Hopefully it’s as therapeutic to listen to as it is to play and sing.”

Upcoming Show:
