Video Premiere: Deaf Club – ‘Pain in the Assery’

It’s hard to forget an anniversary like September 11 when the date is so baked into the memory of it. Deaf Club, in preparation for their new album—We Demand a Permanent State of Happiness, which is due out on September 19 on Southern Lord Records and Three One G—have something to say about that anniversary. With fast wit and faster blast beats, the album promises a scathing indictment of society, and this single is no exception.

Today, the band are debuting the video for their latest single “Pain in the Assery.” Opening on the sound clip of an Iraq War veteran yelling at George W. Bush for his lies about 9/11, the song launches into a noisy cacophony with an ironic sing-songy bounciness that adds to the demented nature of the song. The video, created with INDECLINE, which features scale models of New York suffering the carnage of September 11, 2001 is a chilling reminder of everything this anniversary entails, especially for those who died, not only on the day, but in the subsequent political aftermath.

“I’m fully aware of the complexity of what 9/11 was and still is,” says Deaf Club’s Justin Pearson. “I see how it resonated in different directions, starting with a low-IQ political puppet on an aircraft carrier fumbling through a poorly written speech in front of an arrogant banner reading ‘Mission Accomplished.’ The dollar store PR stunt which only gradually got into focus for various people at some point showcased the ongoing business of global terror perpetrated by the U.S. Government.

“We can easily look back and see a linear trajectory predating the G.W. Bush Administration heading backwards to the Clinton administration when the government continued the war in Afghanistan which was started by the previous Bush, and before all that, with the Reagan administration bombing parts of the Middle East while fucking around with the Iran Contra scandal. You’d think we could see it now with clear focus in relation to the U.S. Government’s support for genocide in Palestine, and today in DC, with the infant stages of a visible police state. Yeah, we can pick a side in a two party system who are just inbred cousins of a bigger system that always points towards war, the business of war, and the lack of humanity, as well as the lack of intellect to negotiate peace. So you can ‘never forget’ 9/11, and you can also just forget, because the politics of war are not concerned with anyone’s wellbeing.”
