Having taken root in both Vancouver and Belgium and now located in the Okanagan Valley, post-noise-rock trio Down the Lees—made up of guitarist/vocalist Laura Lee Schultz, Andy Ashley on drums, and Chris Carlson on bass—have been building a reputation for their vital and energetic live shows and a sharp lyrical edge. The band have recorded with Steve Albini and shared stages with the likes of Brutus, Pile, Sparta, KEN mode, and Dead Bob and are still reeling from the success of their 2024 album Dirt. But now they’re doing something a little different. The band recorded an intimate set at Mary Irwin Theatre and are turning it into a fully live visual album called This is What It Feels Like.
Today, the band are debuting a live video from the film/album called “Midi Doric,” a powerhouse of emotion that finds a balance between melody and noise that’s greatly enhanced by the live energy of the track. Expressing the pain and loneliness that came with the COVID-19 pandemic, the song captures those emotions in an elaborate artistic creation that will resonate with everyone.
