Louisville post-punk trio FOTOCRIME are sharing their first in a series of cover songs with the single and video, “Avalanche,” a rendition of the Leonard Cohen track featuring cello by Sarah Balliet from Murder By Death. Check out the visualizer video right here at New Noise.
Band founder Ryan Patterson created the visualizer and says the covers came as a bit of palate-cleansing before FOTOCRIME began recording their next full-length.
“Deconstructing beloved songs that are part of my musical DNA is both a joy and a terrifying challenge. It’s impossible to capture the perfection of the original but it’s an exciting undertaking to find a way to pay tribute to something that means so much to me while finding my own take on the song,” Patterson says. “Leonard Cohen is certainly ground zero in terms of my vocal and lyrical influences and the darkness of ‘Avalanche’ lends itself to endless interpretation. It is the bleakest of love songs and a most bitter kiss-off.”
Patterson is joined by two fellow Louisville underground artists, longtime friends and collaborators Nick Thieneman (Young Widows, Fool’s Ghost) on guitar and bassist Will Allard (Aon Brasi, Xerxes). The trio lines the stages of their live shows for a guitar- and synth-fueled assault, backed by the trusty pummeling of their drum machine. Their unique, organic-meets-electronic sound is immediately recognizable, boasting tracks both intimate and poignant but also immediate and visceral.
FOTOCRIME are also looking ahead to a number of North American tour dates and plan to share the remaining covers in conjunction with the new list. Check those out below:
