Experimental post-punk/darkwave duo Gelax are back from an extended hiatus. Made up of singer-songwriter Gelareh and multi-instrumentalist Tareq, the group is known for their in-your-face visuals daring experimentalism. Following a string of powerhouse singles between 2017 and 2019, the group culminated that run with the release of their EP Dreamonic in 2021. Now Galareh and Tareq are back with their new album Shh… out March 29 from Mint 400 Records.
Today, they’re debuting their single “Loki” off the upcoming album. “The song just came effortlessly, especially after the COVID pandemic period,” the duo explain, “where we saw a big unrest between races, sexes, genders, sexualities, political views, ideological views, even scientific matters. It felt like a big divide was happening all while some corporate masters seemed to be profiting more than ever. There was an existential threat to us all as humans coming in the form of diseases, inequality, political dictatorships, atmospheric changes to our weather, etc , yet we were not paying attention and directing our frustrations towards each other. Loki is the warning. The shape shifting god is coming back to add to our chaos and deception while we’re all distracted.”
The track is packed with haunting melodies and big, swirling keyboards. That’s complimented in the video by the shadowy, smokey vibe and disturbing imagery that the group has become known for. Check out the video below.
