Video Premiere: Half Past Two – Capsule (Suicide Machines Cover)

Orange County ska band Half Past Two have been around since 2006 but find themselves firmly aligned with the burgeoning New Tone scene. Having toured with ska legends from Reel Big Fish to The Aquabats to Less Than Jake to The English Beat, Half Past Two are a force to be reckoned with in ska.

Today, they’re premiering their latest video in which they cover the Suicide Machines’ classic “Capsule” from their 2008 record War Profiteering is Killing Us All. The song was produced and mixed by We Are the Union frontwoman Reade Wolcott and engineered by David Irish and Reade Wolcott.

“This style of ska punk isn’t our speciality, and singing it definitely took me out of my element, but it’s been so much fun,” explains vocalist Tara Hahn. “In the studio with Reade (Wolcott), I didn’t even want to get into the booth, I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to pull off such an aggressive song. If anything, we thought this cover would be funny because it’s so far off of our typical stuff. The joke is on us though because it’s really good. Maybe we’ll do more songs like it, I don’t know!”
Hahn certainly outdoes herself on this song and definitely proves herself to be more up to the task than she expected herself to be. The song captures all of the aggressive fury of the original Suicide Machines track while still putting their own unique spin on the song. The raw and powerful black and white video was directed by renowned ska-scene photographer Rae Mystic who has directed videos for We Are the Union and Eichlers as well as served as cinematographer for the upcoming documentary This is New Tone.
